3D printing of prosthetics and sockets
The combined use of 3D scanning and desktop 3D printing allows today to create lightweight, resistant and comfortable prostheses at a very low cost, thus increasing the user base that can access them.
The cost saving compared to standard prostheses is due to the possibility of 3D printing also the mechanical parts of the prosthesis. 3D technologies ensure high customization of the prostheses, allowing the patient to feel comfortable both physically and socially.
The workflow consists of a first phase of 3D scanning of the user's residual limb, a design phase using a 3D modeling software and a phase of 3D printing where all the components of the prosthesis are made, from the fingers to the socket, and mechanical parts. The adoption of this type of process guarantees significant savings in terms of time and construction costs.
Finally, the possibility to extrude a wide range of different materials (PLA, TPU, technopolymers) allows the various parts of the prosthesis to fulfill the different functions required.
Different 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies and numerous materials available, at an affordable price.
